Vault Discovery – Allman Brothers Fillmore East 1970

The Allman Brothers Band Fillmore East 1970 MMR Cover

Valentine’s Day weekend at the Fillmore East in 1970 has long been regarded as a seminal moment in rock history. At least to those of us that have a propensity for long jam centered bands such as the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers. Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 featured three discs of the Dead’s finest moments that weekend and quickly became one of the most popular entries in the Dick’s Picks series. So much so that most people often forget that the Allman Brothers opened and in the short hour they had to play they absolutely killed!

Now streaming over at Wolfgang’s Vault is the Allman’s complete six song set in some pretty fantastic sound quality with excellent stereo separation. “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” opens in a smoking version full of fantastic solos from Dickey and Duane. “Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Outskirts of Town” show the pure blues background the band was capable of while “Whipping Post” has them providing full tilt rock and roll with a psychedelic edge. “Mountain Jam,” split into two parts, goes a full 35 minutes and displays a raw rock edge that directly contrasts the decidedly more jazzy and fluid version found on Fillmore East 1971 a year later.

There is also a FANTASTIC video of the Allmans playing “Whipping Post” in September of 1970 at the Filmore East. The video quality is outstanding and my only question is why aren’t they releasing this as an official DVD?! Regardless, this is some pure vintage Allmans doing what they do best!

You can stream the concert here and watch the video on the main page here!
